Jiddu Krishnamurti - Understanding whole content of Fear

Jiddu Krishnamurti - Is it possible for the mind to empty itself totally of fear? Fear of any kind breeds illusion; it makes the mind dull, shallow. Where there is fear there is obviously no freedom, and without freedom there is no love at all. And most of us have some form of fear: fear of darkness, fear of public opinion, fear of snakes, fear of physical pain, fear of old age, fear of death. We have literally dozens of fears. And is it possible to be completely free of fear?

We can see what fear does to each one of us. It makes one tell lies; it corrupts one in various ways; it makes the mind empty, shallow. There are dark corners in the mind which can never be investigated and exposed as long as one is afraid. Physical self-protection, the instinctive urge to keep away from the venomous snake, to draw back from the precipice, to avoid falling under the tramcar, and so on, is sane, normal, healthy.

But I am talking about the psychological self-protectiveness which makes one afraid of disease, of death, of an enemy. When we seek fulfillment in any form, whether through painting, through music, through relationship, or what you will, there is always fear. So, what is important is to be aware of this whole process in oneself, to observe, to learn about it, and not ask how to get rid of fear. When you merely want to get rid of fear, you will find ways and means of escaping from it, and so there can never be freedom from fear.

If you consider what fear is and how to approach it, you will see that for most of us the word is much more important than the fact. Take the word loneliness. By that word I mean the sense of isolation that suddenly comes upon one for no apparent reason. I don't know if this has ever happened to you. Though you may be surrounded by your family, by your neighbors, though you may be walking with friends or riding in a crowded bus, suddenly you feel completely isolated.

From the memory of that experience there is fear of isolation, of being lonely. Or you are attached to someone who dies, and you find yourself left alone, isolated. Feeling that sense of isolation, you escape from it by means of the radio, the cinema, or you turn to sex, to drink, or you go to church, worship God. Whether you go to church or take a pill, it is an escape, and all escapes are essentially the same.

Now, the word loneliness prevents us from entering into a complete understanding of that state. The word, associated with past experience, evokes the feeling of danger and creates fear; therefore, we try to run away. Please watch yourself as in a mirror, do not just listen to me, and you will see that the word has extraordinary significance for most of us. Words like God, communism, hell, heaven, loneliness, wife, family - what an astonishing influence they have on us.

We are slaves to such words, and the mind that is a slave to words is never free of fear. To be aware of and learn about fear in oneself is not to interpret that feeling in words, for words are associated with the past, with knowledge; and in the very movement of learning about fear without verbalization, which is not to acquire knowledge about it, you will find there is a total emptying of the mind of all fear.

This means that one has to go very deeply into oneself, putting aside all words; and when the mind understands the whole content of fear and is therefore empty of fear, both conscious and unconscious, then there comes a state of innocency.

For most Christians that word innocency is merely a symbol; but I am talking of actually being in a state of innocency, which means having no fear, and therefore the mind is completely mature, instantly, without going through the passage of time.

And that is possible only when there is total attention, an awareness of every thought, of every word, of every gesture. The mind is attentive without the barrier of words, without interpretation, justification, or condemnation. Such a mind is a light unto itself, and a mind that is a light unto itself has no fear.

We are going to play in Riga, Latvia on 16th September at the very cool music festival called Skaņu mežā’2011 with Maria Minerva. I am so exciting to visit in Riga first time!!
And I just found amazing leggings made by the Latvian graphic designer Alyona and her clothing label is called QooQoo.
I love the sound of "Qoo Qoo" as well as how the graphics printed on the legging and clothes.
Here are crazy leggings that I am going to buy when I visit Riga and I'll wear on stage for sure. We are arriving one day before so I am gonna check cool shops in Riga!!!

Here I am in the dressing room a little while before I play. I'm feeling very tightly wound and for no good reason at all. I feel as if I am losing my mind. I have only a few shows to go on this tour and then I head home. I'm not looking forward to the trans-atlantic flight at all. Anything could happen!

I hate flying. I mean I REALLY hate flying. I hate the airline industry. I hate airplanes. I hate airports. I hate people who work for the airlines. I hate the people who work at the airports. I hate flight delays. I hate flight cancellations. I hate cab drivers. I hate all forms of public transportation. I hate people. I hate people who think I should take a "loser cruiser" bus TO the airport. My god, just think about that. Do you have any idea how much gas is going to have to cost before I decide to take the loser cruiser bus to the fucking airport? I hate boarding passes. I hate getting to the airport. I hate getting home from the airport. I hate driving to the airport. I hate getting a ride to the airport. I hate the people who design airports. I hate car rental agencies. I hate the people who work at car rental agencies. I hate the police. I hate the security at airports. I hate the people who fly on airplanes. I hate the pilots who fly the airplanes. I hate airport "art." I hate airport bathrooms. I hate the old and feeble anyway and I REALLY hate them on airplanes. I hate children anyway and I REALLY hate them on airplanes. I hate the handicapped. I hate the fact that they can get on the plane before me but I love that they have to get off last. Ha! I hate babies. I hate people who make babies. I hate airport mom. I hate airport dad. I hate public breast feeding. I hate baby food. I hate strollers. I hate kids running wild in airports. I hate kids on kid leashes. I hate airport crying. I hate the constant screaming. I hate that parents can't beat their heathen children to death if need be in airports. I hate unattended bags that aren't torn apart by dogs on the runways. I hate attended bags. I hate working airport dogs. I hate weed heads. I hate the way the air moves in airports. I hate watching people argue with flight attendants. I hate the way flight attendants dress. I hate everything about pilots. I hate airport food. I hate airport smokers. I hate airport smoking sections. I hate the fact that you can't smoke in an airport but you can let your kids live out the airport version of Lord Of the Flies with no questions asked. I hate biters. I hate dirty plastic hallways. I hate when moving sidewalks DON'T work but you still have to walk on them. I hate airport elevators. I hate dirty airport windows. I hate airport homos. I hate straight people. I hate having to take an airport shuttle. I hate having to take an airport train. I hate customs. I hate passport controllers. I hate anyone who's ever looked at or stamped my passport. I hate anyone who's ever thought it was OK for someone to look at or stamp my passport. I hate answering immigration questions. I hate anyone who has ever asked me an immigration question. I hate getting my finger prints taken at the airport. I hate having my picture taken at the airport. I hate having my bag searched. I hate anyone who has ever searched my bags. I hate anyone who has ever DECIDED to search my bags. I hate the airport x-ray machine. I hate the person who invented the airport x-ray machine. I hate all the people who have ever or will ever install an airport x-ray machine. I hate the people who run the airport x-ray machine. I hate the people who hired the people to run the airport x-ray machine. I hate metal detectors and I especially hate the fucking wand ones. I hate anyone who has ever searched me with a wand metal detector. I hate getting airport strip searched. I hate anyone who has ever searched me at all at an airport with or without the strip search. I hate ANYONE from a fucking airport touching me AT ALL. I hate anyone who's ever thought it was OK for someone to search me or my bags. I hate checking my bags. I hate baggage handlers. Fuck that shit. I hate airport announcements. I hate the people MAKING the airport announcements. I hate dirty toilets. I hate shitting in an airport bathroom NEXT to someone even if they are in a walled stall. I hate ass gaskets. I hate people who talk on their cell phone while shitting in an airport bathroom. I hate airport bathroom blowjobs. I hate never getting an airport bathroom blowjob. I hate never being offered an airport bathroom blowjob. I hate hand dryers. I hate airport graffiti unless it's the words "fuck you." I hate the messy fucking pig bastards who use airport bathrooms. I've seen cleaner animal stalls at the fucking zoo! I hate frequent flyer miles. I hate frequent flyers. I hate people who upgrade with their pussy ass frequent flyer miles. What about those of us who are frequently pissed off flyers? What about those of us who are frequently fucked over flyers? I'll tell you what WE get, WE get nothing. WE get NO upgrade and are rewarded for our troubles with a horrible MIDDLE seat. I hate the section loading they do on some airlines. I hate lines. I hate waiting IN lines. I hate the person who invented the line. I HATE old ladies who take cuts in line. I hate people who walk around the planes with fucking bare feet. I hate nuns. I hate airplane drunks but I love zonked out airplane pill heads. I hate the people who NEVER shut the fuck up. I hate airplane movies and why is it they show nothing but Whoopi Goldberg atrocities on every trans-atlantic flight I've ever been on? I REALLY hate Whoopi Goldberg. I hate sitting on the runway. I hate prissy little momma betties greasing and burning. I hate airplane pillows. I hate airplane blankets. I hate window seats. I hate not having a window seat. I hate overhead luggage compartments. I hate storing things under the seat in front of me. I hate the safety announcements. I hate the thought of breathing oxygen through a butter dish as the plane plummets into the earth. I hate being told how to buckle a fucking seat belt. Are there really STILL people who don't know how to do this? Should we be worried about an adult who at this point doesn't know how to buckle a seat belt? I say fuck 'em if they are that dumb. I hate barf bags. I hate well thumbed airplane magazines. I hate thinking about a 600 mile per hour water landing. Has that ever happened? Do jumbo jet planes float after plowing into the sea? Do you have time to off load into a rubber raft before the destroyed body of the plane fills with sea water and sinks like a god damn stone? By the way, I'm taking my carry-on bag with me no matter what!

Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking recently explained his belief that there is no God and that humans should therefore seek to live the most valuable lives they can while on Earth.

Guardian writer Ian Sample asked Hawking if he feared death in a story published yesterday. This was his response:

I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first. I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.

Hawking's 1988 book "A Brief History of Time" sold 9 million copies, and in it Hawking referenced God metaphorically as the force that could fully explain the creation of the universe.

But in 2010, Hawking told Diane Sawyer that "science will win" in a battle with religion "because it works."

"What could define God [is a conception of divinity] as the embodiment of the laws of nature. However, this is not what most people would think of that God," Hawking told Sawyer. "They made a human-like being with whom one can have a personal relationship. When you look at the vast size of the universe and how insignificant an accidental human life is in it, that seems most impossible."

Hawking's latest book, "The Grand Design," challenged Isaac Newton's theory that the solar system could not have been created without God. "Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to ... set the Universe going," he writes.

Hawking was diagnosed with the degenerative Lou Gehrig's disease at the age of 21. He lost his power of speech and for decades has talked through an electronic speech synthesizer. The device has allowed him to continue his research and attain a top Cambridge research post, which was previously held by Newton. His most famous theory explains how black holes emit radiation, according to The Guardian.

So if everyone is destined to power-down like computers at the end of their lives, what should humans do to lend meaning to their experience?

"We should seek the greatest value of our action," Hawking told the paper.

Osama Bin Laden -- Everyone's Missing the Point

The jubilation of Americans and Western leaders at the death of Osama bin Laden, though understandable, misses the point. In many ways, the figure gunned down in Pakistan was already irrelevant -- more a symbol of past dangers than a real threat for the future.

Indeed, from the point of view of America and many of its allies, the most menacing symbol in the Arab World today is not Osama bin Laden but another Arab who recently met a violent death -- Mohamed Bouazizi, the 26-year-old Tunisian fruit vendor who chose to set himself on fire after being harassed by corrupt local police.

His act, of course, ignited the storm that has spread across the Arab World and proven a much more serious threat to America's allies in the region than al Qaeda ever was. Ironically, his sacrifice probably also dealt a far more devastating blow to al Qaeda's fortunes than the assassination of Osama bin Laden.

The Arab world today bears no relationship to the situation a decade ago after 9/11. Obsessed with bin Laden and al Qaeda, the U.S. has been sucked into a vast quagmire -- a disaster for the Americans, their economy, and their standing in the Arab World.

What particularly provoked Osama bin Laden -- a Saudi -- was the decision of Saudi rulers to accept the presence of more than a hundred thousand "infidel" U.S. troops and their allies in Saudi Arabia following Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait. In general, he and his followers were outraged by U.S. support for corrupt, repressive regimes from Saudi Arabia to Egypt to Yemen, as well, of course, for America's backing of Israel.

As Osama himself told CNN in 1997, "the U.S. wants to occupy our countries, steal our resources, impose agents on us to rule us and then wants us to agree to all this. If we refuse to do so, it says we are terrorists... Wherever we look, we find the U.S. as the leader of terrorism and crime in the world."

Bin Laden's message resonated throughout the Muslim world. But U.S. officials remained deaf to its meaning, and continued obsessed with al Qaeda and its Taliban allies. The upshot -- U.S. policy was the best recruiter Osama could have asked for. Over the past decade, hundreds of thousands of American soldiers, CIA killer teams, mercenaries, predators, and "diplomats" swarmed across the region from Iraq to Afghanistan to Pakistan to Yemen and Somalia, supported by sprawling new bases and pharaonic embassies.

The bill for all this -- for an America crippled by cutbacks in health, infrastructure. and education -- will be in the trillions of dollars. But despite this massive effort, none of those targeted Arab countries could by any stretch of the imagination be considered a success story. Hostility to the U.S. is high throughout the region. In polls, the majority of those Arabs queried consider the United States a greater threat than al Qaeda.

In Pakistan, despite the U.S. lavishing tens of billions of dollars on that country's military, it turns out that Osama bin Laden, rather than groveling as an outlaw in the isolated tribal regions, has been living in a fortified villa near the country's major military academy and a large army base, just a few miles away from the capital city.

America had also launched an ambitious civilian aid program: $7.5 billion over five years, designed to win Pakistani hearts and minds and bolster the civilian government. But, corruption is so rife throughout the Pakistani government, and its officials so incompetent, that the U.S. has been unable to disburse most of the aid. As the New York Times reports:

Instead of polishing the tarnished image of America with a suspicious, even hostile, Pakistani public and government, the plan has resulted in bitterness and a sense of broken promises...

The economy is failing. Education, health care and other services are almost nonexistent, while civilian leaders from the landed and industrialist classes pay hardly any taxes.

Pakistanis see the aid as a crude attempt to buy friendship and an effort to alleviate antipathy toward United States drone attacks against militants in the tribal areas.

The same reports come from Afghanistan. A decade after the U.S. invaded, tens of thousands of American troops are still fighting what seems to be, at best, a see-saw battle against the Taliban. There also, according to another report in the New York Times , the U.S. is backing incompetent, corrupt, unpopular leaders. Millions of dollars of U.S. funds actually get diverted as payoffs to the Taliban and their allies -- bribing them not to attack U.S. projects, such as $65 million highway that may never be completed in Eastern Afghanistan.

The vast expenses and unsavory alliances surrounding the highway have become a parable of the corruption and mismanagement that turns so many well-intended development efforts in Afghanistan into sinkholes for the money of American taxpayers, even nine years into the war.

Now back to Mohamed Bouazizi the Tunisian fruit vendor whose death unleashed the Arab Spring that is still roiling the region.

Though Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have yet to be credited with overthrowing an Arab regime, the spark provided by Bouazizi has already led to the downfall of American-backed tyrants in Tunisia and Egypt, and continues to threaten other despots in Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain.

Ironically, most of the leaders overthrown or desperately trying to hang on to power had declared themselves implacable enemies of al Qaeda. Yet, again, it was not bin Laden, but Bouazizi, who turned out to be a far greater menace.

Precisely for that reason, it is Bouazizi's Arab Spring, not sophisticated U.S. killer teams, that most threaten al Qaeda and its allies. By demonstrating that secular uprisings can succeed in toppling the aged, crusty tyrannies, young Arabs across the region have -- so far -- undercut the appeal of the Islamic radicals.

So far, because despite the early successes in Tunisia and Egypt, the future of the Arab Spring is far from clear. The current process will take decades to play out. The political and economic establishments have been decapitated in Egypt and Tunisia, but not decimated. In the rest of the region, though seriously shaken, the old order still reigns supreme.

The same corrupt Saudi regime that fueled bin Laden's outrage is still in power, still backed by the United States. Indeed, they have been doing their utmost to tamp the spreading revolt, spending millions to bribe Yemen's tribal leaders, dispatching their troops to Bahrain to help crush the uprising of the Shiite majority in that country.

Indeed, that brutal repression may radicalize thousands of young Shiites, generating hosts of new recruits for al Qaeda or other extremists Islamic groups -- even as the corpse of Osama bin Laden lies somewhere at the bottom of the sea.

We played at Ravenna, Italy last weekend with Kode 9 and Space Ape.
We really had good time there. The sound man and stage manager was amazing guy, Dario and we bought special hand made Ravenna microphones from him. The mic has special sound quality and made Roger's voice sound like very warm and rusty old reggae recording. I cannot wait to sing with the mic at next show in Leeds UK.
